Do like most people do and contact them and make them an offer they can't refuse to end the auction early. If it is that great of an item then someone else will and then you will feel even worse for not getting your chance.

On Ebay, yes. Sometimes I'll see if the seller will take some ammount to end early. Usually they don't though, and I'll put it on my watch list, and stare at it for the next week.

The day before, I'll decide on a max price and lock in my snipe.

In the final hour, I'll bring the page up and keep clicking refresh.

In the final seconds, I'll open another browser window and prepare a manual snipe, just in case my auto-snipe jams.
I'll hit refresh-refresh-refresh, and watch everything unfold. It's exciting, in a nerdy kind of way.

Why do people sneak around and offer prices to get sellers to end the auction early? Why not just put in your highest bid (highest offer), and if everyone did that then everyone would have a fair shot at it. Oftentimes, an item will be bid higher than some under the table offer, anyway.
